Back to New Haven

We are back in New Haven again for the first time since Silas was born. It's good to be back in our home away from home.

Silas had his final appointment at Children's Hospital Boston on Wednesday and got a clean bill of health. He is now 8 lbs, 4 oz, and is meeting all of his developmental benchmarks. His neurosurgery shows every sign of being successful in treating his hydrocephalus so far, and we are hopeful that the good news will continue. After a long day of appointments at the spina bifida clinic at CHB, the doctors gave us the green light to head home. We will return for a second clinic and a head ultrasound on Dec. 16, and we have an appointment to meet his new pediatrician in New Haven tomorrow. All of his doctors were impressed with Silas's progress (and how cute he is), which made us proud.

We drove down to New Haven from Boston this afternoon and are now getting settled back into our place here. Things are just as we left them (which is strange because the last night we spent here Sada went into labor). Our plans are to stay in New Haven until about Dec. 18 when things will wind down at Yale and we'll head back to California. For now, we'll be enjoying life with Silas back at our home in Connecticut.

We had a wonderful experience in Boston. The staff at Children's Hospital Boston were phenomenal. After being discharged last Monday we stayed in the area until his follow-up appointment yesterday in order to be close to the hospital in case of any problems (thankfully there were none). We had a chance to visit with old friends, see some of the city, and get adjusted to life with baby Silas outside of the hospital. A visiting nurse came to check on us a few times and helped give us some pointers (and our H1N1 vaccines) .

Here are a few pictures of some highlights from our time in Boston:

Sada and Becky in Boston Garden with Silas and Eleanor.

Walking along the Charles River in Cambridge.

Baby bath time.

The moose outfit from his cousin, Claire.

Exercise time.

Mommy and baby in our home away from home in Cambridge.

Baby's first trip to the Atlantic (at Manchester-by-the-Sea). Don't worry, baby -- the water's a lot warmer in San Luis Obispo (yeah, right).

Sada and Grandma and Grandpa show Silas around Harvard Yard. (Silas is unimpressed.)

Silas's scar from his brain surgery is continuing to heal. We are so grateful to everyone for their prayers and encouragement through this process. Silas is doing wonderfully. It's hard for us to believe that only two weeks ago we were preparing for surgery and fearing for the worst. Today he is active, happy, and alert, and growing bigger and stronger every day. We are so blessed by this beautiful baby boy.
