Last minute, we know. We're scrambling to pack, but we just received confirmation on Friday that Silas is scheduled for decannulation (trach out) tomorrow morning! We'll get to UCSF early tomorrow and the surgery is scheduled for noon. It's not a complicated or dangerous procedure, but the doctors insist on watching him overnight to be sure there are no complications and that he's still able to get the oxygen he needs while he sleeps, just now through a nasal cannula rather than a mask over his trach. We (and the doctors) are not totally sure it will be successful, but we won't know until we try. Silas appears to be ready (medically) and we are VERY ready. (Actually, we're a little nervous about getting used to a big change after 19 months of this, but it's a nervous we can live with.)
We'll post more when we can, but thank you all for your encouragement and prayers.
Noon. Tomorrow.
This is an older photo but it reminds me of how patient, curious, and strong Silas has been through all this.
