Six Months Old!

It's hard to believe our baby boy is now six months old. Six months ago tonight, baby Silas was in an ambulance riding North from New Haven to Children's Hospital Boston. Like that Tuesday night half a year ago, tonight is cool and rainy here on the central coast of California. It seems like a world away. That late night last October, Aunt Michelle was driving dad up to Boston and Grandma Lois was caring for mom back at Yale-New Haven Hospital where she was recovering from her c-section. That was the beginning of an adventure that has brought us--with many twists and turns--to where we are today. It is such a joy to see how far Silas has come through his many challenges over these past six months.

Today Silas is recovering well and healing quickly back at home since his release from the hospital three weeks ago. He now has physical therapy and occupational therapy twice per week, and a home nurse visits once a week to check up on him. He is gaining strength every day and is making amazing strides in catching up from lost time during his hospitalization.

Silas continues to amaze us with his patience and courage. He has every reason to be melancholy, yet he is cheerful. He smiles and laughs uncontrollably each time he looks into a mirror, and he isn't a bit discouraged when his laughter comes out as silence through his trach. He finds pleasure in the simplest things like touching a stuffed animal or exploring the movements of his fingers. He still kicks his legs when he's excited, and his neck is now stronger than ever. Each morning he wakes up smiling with wide eyes and a sense of wonder. We feel so blessed to have such a patient and happy baby.

Silas has begun shamelessly promoting his mom's triathlon coming up this weekend. Even though Mama didn't have much time to train this year (the three weeks in the hospital put that schedule on hold), Sada will be swimming/biking/running the Wildflower Triathlon this weekend. It's a huge event, and she's racing with Team Lifewater, working to raise money for safe water wells in northern Uganda. You can help by clicking here. Mama hopes she'll have enough strength to carry Silas across the finish line with her.

Silas picked out this outfit himself to show his support.

Thanks, everyone, for all of your love and support for Silas and his parents these past six months. We love and appreciate you more than you know.
